Another fantastic release from BGP. This one really stretches the notion of instrumental funk/soul into jazz territory. Sounds like mid 70s Herbie Hancock at times. I say it's the perfect funk album for the exploratively minded jazz fan.
Unlike the other reviewer, I didn't detect any annoying "disco" sounds on this compilation, subtitled "Incendiary Funk and R&B Instrumentals 1966-1973. Instead, I found this to be a very satisfying, and very tasty, stew of soul and funk tunes, with some jazz and blues garnishes on a few tracks as well. And as a baseball fan, how could I resist a track titled "Roly Poly Mickey Lolich". Great stuff!
For an apt description, I like this passage in the CD's liner notes, calling the music "...gritty R&B numbers from the mid-1960s through to wah-wah funk from a decade later. 'Instrumental Explosion' is our homage to those sounds. We have screeching Hammonds, horns, flutes, hip talking over grooves (maybe not strictly instrumental --- though the credits would have read 'Instrumental with speech'), mumbles, and a few vocal chants. Not a song in sight."
Like other compilations that I've bought from BGP, this one is long on both minutes and quality. Don't let the obscure names on this compilation dissuade you from getting this CD. This is lively music that will appeal to lovers of 60s & 70s funk and soul. The CD also comes with a 12-page booklet with details on each track.

I love instrumental soul as much as anyone, owning as I do every Booker T and the MGs album. The trouble with this is the mediocre writing rather than any problem with the playing, which is generally very good. I don't expect a song with lyrics here (for obvious reasons!), but I do hope for an imaginative TUNE. I only got this on three tracks: Joe Tex band; Miles Grayson, and Untouchable Machine Shop, total playing time 7.5 minutes. The remaining 50 odd minutes is perhaps of historical interest but underwhelming. For background music - heavily talked over - at a party it might work, but it is unsatisfactory for a proper sit down and listen. I had high hopes for this, but it just did not deliver :(
